More and more people use mobile devices to access the World Wide Web, so the need for mobile-friendly websites is permanently growing. To fulfill this demand, the entity that operates the universal top-level domain name extensions, ICANN, launched the dot MOBI domain extension in 2005. The first registrations were started in September 2006, and the intention behind this domain name extension is that all websites that use it need to comply with special requirements. In other words, all .MOBI websites should be created to be opened flawlessly by mobile devices in accordance with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” formulated by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in partnership with the dot MOBI Registry. These have to do with how a web page is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), and so on.

The requirements have raised some concerns given that the generic top-level domain name extension is the only one that specifies what devices need to be able to access a website and the way in which this has to happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a web page should be created in such a way as to be viewed by the majority of web browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
